Da Costa Named HE Player Of The Week

By Mike McMahon

Stephane Da Costa was named Hockey East Player of the Week on Monday.

In just his second career game, Da Costa had a natural hat trick in the first period and netted five goals in all, leading Merrimack to a 6-3 victory over Army Saturday night at Lawler Arena.

Da Costa’s night marked the first time since Merrimack joined hockey East 21 years ago that a Warrior has scored five times in a game, and it was the most goals by a single player in the 36-year history of Lawler Arena. He became the first Hockey East player since Boston College’s Brian Gionta on January 27, 2001 to score five goals in a game and is the first player to score five goals and get a natural hat trick as part of his first collegiate goal in Hockey East history.

The freshman also had 11 shots on goal, most by a Merrimack player since joining Hockey East, and had three power play goals, which are tied for the second most in NCAA history and the most since November 6, 2005.

Merrimack (2-2), off to its best start at home since the 2000-01 season, hosts #11 Vermont Friday at 7 p.m. in its conference opener.

Mike: Well deserved and a no brainer for the Hockey East Higherups or who ever vote for it:
Some weeks are probably difficult choices between 4-5 players since all teams could be in play both nights but well deserved for Mr Da Costa this week

Oh: all ye who got to Merrimack home games, bring your hats everygame for when he got the natural hat trick none of had hats to toss over the glass! and not one was tossed out on the ice:

Part of it could have been the horrible muddied sound of the intercom system and not everyone knew he had 3 in a row!

Lets have the Volpe covered in hats next time he or someone gets 3 at home!

Absolutely, I was going to throw mine out there…but they dont make the Merrimack Hat that I have anymore and I’ve grown attached to it. Although, thinking back on it, I think he deserved it :)

Excited to see what this team can do against Vermont on Friday!

the bigger news is that he’s our POTW and ROTW this week, obviously.

Mike S: Got to agree with you on the hat you had on for if I was unsure I wouldnt get it back I probably would not throw mine on the ice but I imagine all we would have to do is watch who picks it up and follow them to where they go and then get it back from them ( although you probably would have some innovative kids run over and pick out a good hat that they like and it would be almost impossible to prove it was ours )

Maybe I will start to bring a grungy hat I dont care if i never get it back and throw that on the ice the next time someone gets 3 goals!
